Why it exists
Researchers and cultural institutions need to compare historical space with modern geography while keeping uncertainty visible—and EraWeaver needs those layers to become explorable, cited worlds.
A prototype for comparing historical maps with geographic references for use in EraWeaver. Map fitting uses user-entered control coordinates and a cited map source; individual point provenance needs review. It does not read device GPS. A single site anchor cannot establish scale, orientation, or accuracy, so provenance, uncertainty, and rights still need review.

Historical alignment is interpretive and is not GPS-certified. Palimpsest does not request or use device location for map fitting; users enter control coordinates and a map citation, while each point's provenance needs review. A separate, optional EraWeaver distance check can ask for browser location to compare against an approximate site pin. That coordinate is not submitted to or stored by this app, and browser/OS location handling remains subject to your device settings. The check does not verify the historic footprint or improve map accuracy.
Palimpsest is being explored as a possible source of map layers for EraWeaver. Current alignment is interpretive and has not been certified or verified for positional accuracy.
